Bloody Bones (Rawhead) Pictures

Bloody Bones is a boogeyman feared by children, and is sometimes called Rawhead and Bloody-Bones, Tommy Rawhead, or "Rawhead". The term was used "to awe children, and keep them in subjection", as recorded by John Locke in 1693.

Bloody-Bones is usually said to live near ponds, but according to Ruth Tongue in Somerset Folklore, "lived in a dark cupboard, usually under the stairs. If you were heroic enough to peep through a crack you would get a glimpse of the dreadful, crouching creature, with blood running down his face, seated waiting on a pile of raw bones that had belonged to children who told lies or said bad words.

A grindylow is a folkloric creature that originated from folktales in the English county of Yorkshire.

Grindylows are a sort of "bogeyman" used as a ploy to frighten children away from pools, marshes or ponds; they are said to grab little children with their long arms and fingers and devour them if they come too close to the water's edge. They appear as some kind of light mud colored octopuses with large heads and big yellow eyes. Peg Powler and Jenny Greenteeth are similar water spirits.

Barghest Images

Barghest, Bargtjest, Bo-guest, Bargest or Barguest is the name often given in the north of England, especially in Yorkshire, to a legendary monstrous black dog with huge teeth and claws, though in other cases the name can refer to a ghost or Household elf, especially in Northumberland and Durham (see Cauld Lad of Hylton).

One is said to frequent a remote gorge named Troller's Gill. There is also a story of a Barghest entering the city of York occasionally, where, according to legend, it preys on lone travelers in the city's narrow Snickelways.

Manticore Images

The manticore is a legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth (like a shark), and a trumpet-like voice.

Other aspects of the creature vary from story to story. It may be horned, winged, or both. The tail is that of either a dragon or a scorpion, and it may shoot poisonous spines to either paralyze or kill its victims. The creature's feet may also be of a dragon.

Crocotta Pictures

The crocotta is a mythical dog-wolf of India or Ethiopia, said to be a deadly enemy of men and dogs.

The scientific name of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) was taken from the mythological Crocotta, and there are some similarities in the description. Hyena do have very powerful teeth and jaws and can digest a wide range of foods. They are known to dig up human bodies for food, and can make unnervingly human-like vocalizations (such as their famous laugh).

A cockatrice is a legendary creature, resembling a large rooster with a lizard-like tail, "an ornament in the drama and poetry of the Elizabethans" Laurence Breiner described it; "the cockatrice, which no one ever saw, was born by accident at the end of the twelfth century and died in the middle of the seventeenth, a victim of the new science".

Its reputed magical abilities include turning people to stone or killing them by either looking at them — "the death-darting eye of Cockatrice" — touching them, or sometimes breathing on them.

Yara-ma-yha-who Photos

The Yara-ma-yha-who is a creature from Australian Aboriginal folklore. This creature resembles a little red man with a very big head and large mouth with no teeth.

On the ends of its hands and feet are suckers. It lives in fig trees and does not hunt for food, but waits until an unsuspecting traveler rests under the tree, then catches the victim and drains their blood using the suckers on its hands and feet, making them weak.

It later comes back and consumes the person, drinks some water, and then takes a nap. When the Yara-ma-yha-who awakens, it regurgitates the victim, leaving it "shorter" than before. The victim's skin also turns slightly more "red" than before.
